ABOUT
Dean Barrett is a SAMA winning session musician and composer, touring as a pianist and keyboard player with many of South Africa's top music acts of today. When he's not on the road, Dean can be found composing and sessioning on solo and client based pieces, as well as working on video editing and motion graphics projects.
MUSIC PROJECTS
Independent Artist
Listen to the first independent release from Dean Barrett. Created during the 2020 lockdown, "Circa" imagines what would happen in a world where the technology we rely on everyday disappears.
Composer
Dean has a passion for composing unique and idiosyncratic music. He has worked with various clients over the years, including composing music for acclaimed South African and French theatre actor/director Sylvaine Strike and more recently writing multiple mixed genre scores for BiB, an African Audio Library service specialising in local narratives and storytelling.
Session Musician
Dean sessions for various bands, most famously
Dan Patlansky, with whom he has played for during various tours and album recordings. Here, he performs live with Dan, playing 'Big Things Going Down'.
Music Teacher
Dean teaches various levels of piano playing as well as music theory, bringing together exercises and techniques from traditional piano teaching with modern and inventive exercises and songs, offering each student a tailor made learning experience. Lessons are both online and in person for people in the Johannesburg area.

Dean has been working in the television industry for over 11 years, specialising in both offline and online video editing. Experienced with modern post production workflows, Dean works on a variety of content types from music videos and AVs, to commercials and documentaries. He is well equipped to manage complex projects and is an asset to any creative team!

Conceptualising and Scripting
With his experience in the television industry as both an editor and director, Dean is able to turn any idea into reality. Whether it be conceptualising and scriptwriting or directing and producing fresh new content, Dean has a keen sense of what it takes to make an arresting video that can capture the essence of visual storytelling.
